Yana Verba: Ukrainian Song
September 14, 2022 - January 18, 2023
The Display Case offers a little window into the diversity of Ukrainian culture. The materials feature books about Ukrainian artists and Soviet porcelain figures. Included on display is a book on Ukrainian artists in Paris (1900-1939), a Harvard Ukrainian Studies book on Ukrainian Modernism (1910-1930), and a book on Ukrainian Avant-Garde Artists of the 1910s and 1920s, such as Vadym Meller, Borys Kosarev, Vasyly Ermylov, Alexandra Exter, Sonia Delaunay, and Alexander Archipenko. In the middle of the case is an open book with artworks by Kazemir Malevich. Next to it are books on Maria Primachenko, a Ukrainian folk painter. In the right back corner of the case is an open book, "Decommunized: Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics," that depicts "Boryviter" or "Ellada Bird" mosaic by Alla Horska in collaboration with Viktor Zaretskyi, Halyna Zubchenko, Borys Plaksii, Gennadi Pryshedko, N. Svitlychna and V. Prakhninn. The work from 1967 was located in Mariupol until it was destroyed by Russian forces in 2022.
